August 16, 2021, is the 117th birth anniversary of India’s first woman Satyagrahi Subhadra Kumari Chauhan. Subhadra Kumari Chauhan is also known for the poem ‘Jhansi Ki Rani’. On the birth anniversary of Subhadra Kumari Chauhan, Google has honoured her by making a doodle. In which she is writing some poems wearing a white sari and in the background, a glimpse of the Rani of Jhansi and the freedom movement is shown.
At the age of nine, Subhadra Kumari wrote her first poem against the British. Subhadra Kumari was involved in many movements with Mahatma Gandhi. Subhadra Kumari was the first woman Satyagrahi in India to be arrested, who was imprisoned in Nagpur. For her great sacrifices, every Indian should know about Satyagrahi Subhadra Kumari Chauhan.

Google’s doodle on Subhadra Kumari Chauhan is showing the Rani of Jhansi on a white horse, while the main background depicts Subhadra Kumari as she writes poetry. On the other hand, a huge crowd of Satyagrahis has been shown.
This doodle has been made by New Zealand-based guest artist Prabha Mallya. Rani Laxmibai of Jhansi was martyred while fighting against British rule. For which she is always remembered along with Indian freedom fighters.
Biography of Subhadra Kumari Chauhan
Subhadra Kumari Chauhan was a leading author and freedom fighter. She became a great poet and freedom fighter in the era when freedom movements were dominated by men. Subhadra Kumari boosted the morale of the countrymen in the fight for freedom with her poems and raised her voice against gender, caste, colour discrimination and racism.
Subhadra Kumari was born on 16 August 1904 in Nihalpur village in Allahabad District, Uttar Pradesh. Subhadra Kumari attended Crosthwaite Girls’ School and passed middle school in 1919. At the age of 16, Subhadra Kumari was married to Thakur Laxman Singh Chauhan of Khandwa.
When she was sixteen, she had five children. After her marriage to Thakur Laxman Singh Chauhan of Khandwa in the same year, she moved to Jabalpur in the Central Provinces.
Subhadra Kumari and her husband Laxman Singh became a part of Mahatma Gandhi’s non-cooperation movement in 1921. Both were arrested during the movement. Subhadra Kumar was sent to Nagpur Jail and became India’s first woman Satyagrahi.
She continued to participate in the freedom struggle even from prison. Later when she was released, she joined Mahatma Gandhi’s movements in 1942. She also became a member of the Legislative Assembly (Vidhan Sabha) from 1923 to 1942. As a freedom fighter, Subhadra Kumari Chauhan’s struggle continued till 15 August 1947, the day of India’s independence.
Death Reason
She died in a car accident in Seoni, Madhya Pradesh on 15 February 1948, a year after India’s first Independence Day. She was on her way from Nagpur to Jabalpur after attending a session of the Vidhan Sabha.
Honoures
- The ICGS Subhadra Kumari Chauhan, an Indian Coast Guard ship, was named for the poet. The government of Madhya Pradesh placed a statue of Subhadra Kumari Chauhan before the Municipal Corporation office of Jabalpur.
- On 6 August 1976, India Posts released a postage stamp to commemorate her.

- On 16 August 2021, search engine Google commemorated Subhadra Kumari with a Doodle on her 117th birth anniversary. Google commented: “Chauhan’s poetry remains a staple in many Indian classrooms as a symbol of historical progress, encouraging future generations to stand up against social injustice and celebrate the words that shaped a nation’s history”.

In her life span of 44 years, she published a total of 88 poems and 46 short stories. Her most famous work is Jhansi Ki Rani, an emotionally charged poem narrating the life of Rani Lakshmi Bai. The poem is one of the most read and sung poems in Hindi literature. An emotionally charged description of the life of the Rani of Jhansi (British India) and her participation in the Revolution of 1857, is often taught in schools in India.
